WHAT IS SUGAR?
Sugar is anything that is sweet, short-chain or a soluble carbohydrates. Sugars are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. There is a great many different varieties of sugars, that come from different sources. Some types of sugars include: glucose (dextrose), fructose, galactose, sucrose, maltose and lactose. There are healthy and unhealthy sugars. By educating yourself you can still get the sweet flavor you crave the healthy way.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SUGAR
Glucose
Is a simple sugar made by the body through digestion of carbohydrates. The body’s made source of energy.
Sucrose
Is common table sugar that has been processed out of sugar cane or sugar beets.
Fructose
Is the simple sugar found in fruits, honey, berries and melons. Can be found as processed as well, so read your labels and know what you are eating.
High Fructose Syrups
Is made from things like: corn, wheat, and rice. This type of sugar can be made very cheap, so it is found in lots of processed foods. Fructose can increases cholesterol and triglycerides levels. This type of sugar has no nutritional value.
Maltose
Is also called malt sugar and is not ass sweet as other sugars. Maltose is made from starch products like: barley, wheat, rice, grains. China has produced maltose since 200 B.C. It is used in making beer and in some processed foods.
Lactose
Is found in milk naturally.
Date Sugar
Is made from dehydrated dates that are ground into small pieces. Date Sugar in considered to be a healthy sugar alternative.
Sugar Alcohols/ Polyols
Occurs naturally in plants, but are made from sugars and starches. They are low in calories and aren’t completely absorbed into the body.
Artificial Sweeteners
All artificial chemical sweeteners are toxic.
Stevia
Is a healthy sugar alternative. It’s 300 sweeter then table sugar.
Xylitol
Is a natural sugar alcohol sweetener found in fruits and vegetables. Is said to treat: ear infections, osteoporosis, respiratory infections, candida, fight cavities.
Agave Nectar
A sweet syrup made from the Blue Agave plant, Agave Nectar is obtained by the extraction and purification of “sap” from the agave plant, which is broken down by natural enzymes into the monosaccharides (simple sugars): mainly fructose (70-75%) and dextrose (20-26%). Brown Rice Syrup
Sweetness comes from maltose, can cause blood sugars to spike. which is known to cause spikes in blood sugar.
Raw Honey
Is a healthy sugar alternative. Raw honey is considered a super food and contains: antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, carbohydrates. Processed honey has no nutritional value.
Coconut Palm Sugar
Made from the sap of the Palmyra palm, the date palm, sugar date palm or coconut palms.
Amazake
Is an ancient grain sweetener made from cultured brown rice.
Maple Syrup
Made by boiling maple tree sap.

Corn Syrup
Has little nutrition and should be avoided.
