Types of shellfish include: crabs, lobster, clams, scallops, mussels, oysters, winkles, shrimp, crayfish, sea urchin, land crab, squids and octopi

 

BENEFITS OF SHELLFISH


Benefits to eating shellfish include: low cholesterol, low fat, no saturated fat, rich in protein, calcium, triglycerides, reduces fats that clog arteries and B vitamins.

 

RISK OF SHELLFISH


Experts warn that shellfish absorb contaminants from the sea, including bacteria, such as salmonella, and viruses, such as hepatitis A. Uncooked oysters may also contain a bacterium called ‘Vibrio vulnificus,’ which can cause serious illness. Its important to cooked shellfish completely.

  • Store shellfish in the coldest part of the refrigerator .
  • Live shellfish need ventilation. Store in open containers; cover with a damp cloth.
  • Eat fresh shellfish within one or two days of purchase.
